Athletic Accomplishments

A teacher, a sports writer who brought Cape Cod running to the Orleans sports pages on a regular basis, with 34 Boston Marathons to his credit and a 2:47 best, John inspired countless legions of Cape Cod runners. In later years, Gray became a serious race walker, traveling far and wide to race with the best and continued to play tennis as often as he could. Honored by the creation of the John Gray Road Race, a race currently in hibernation which was traditionally held on Labor Day weekend in Orleans, John made sure he walked or ran every one. Most of the 2008 class of CCAC honorees share recognition as one of Gray's Greats, a tradition of the John Gray Road Race where selected local athletes were recognized for their roles in supporting and advocating local fitness, athletics, running and triathlon.
