Huntersville, N.C. – The Grand Master of Marstons Mills, Bill Riley, has added another jewel to his crown.
The 60-year old marvel won his age group competition (60-64) last weekend at the World Duathlon Championship in Huntersville, N.C. Riley, who qualified for the event by winning the national championship for his age group in June, claimed the 10K run, 40K bike, 5K run event in 2:14.32, nearly two minutes ahead of his closest competition. Austria’s Johan Weber was second in 2:16.18.
Riley trailed fourth-place finisher Donald Ardell by two seconds after the first stage of the race, covering the 10K in 38:42. He forged past Ardell early on the bike, fashioning a 4 1/2 minute lead over the field. Riley’s split over the final 5K was fourth fastest overall (23:17), but well within the margin he needed for the win.
