4 CCAC TEAMS SCORE AT BOSTON MARATHON, 4-15-2002 9:45:34 Masters Men (Mike Naughton 3:07:57, Gerry Panuczak 3:15:01, Gene Cormier 3:22:36) 9:46:34 Open Men (Adam Polakowski 2:54:21, Richard Connor 3:06:07, Matt Theodore 3:46:06) 12:10:44 Masters Women (Janet Jordan 3:58:22, Leisa Marks 4:01:35, Tess Watts 4:10:47) 13:53:26 Open Women (Natalie Shea 3:50:50, Danielle Sullivan-McPhee 4:56:52, Jane Lovelette 5:05:44). The CCAC Masters Men, with a balanced performance from an experienced team, edged the Open Men by the slimmest of margins (1 minute). You KNOW its a good team when even Bob Eckerson cannot make it into the top three! The Open Team, despite its relative youth and good looks, was hampered by the fact that it’s third runner, Matt Theodore, was assigned a starting position with more than 14,000 runners in front of him. By the time he had worked his way through the pack, he had lost much more than a minute in traffic. That minute could have made all the difference. He further had to contend with contend with 2 older runners who started in front of him and were trying to wrest the 3rd position on the Open team from him (Mike Herlihy 3:46:44, and Bill Masterson 3:46:50). It took him more than 10 miles to get past Masterson and more than 18 miles to get past Herlihy, but he persevered and prevailed. The CCAC Masters Women, with another balanced performance, beat the Open Women by more than 1 hour. Natalie Shea was the only Open team member to finish ahead of the Masters team members. Next year the CCAC Open teams will need to be supplemented by more talent from the under-40 crowd, which will likely require some aggressive recruiting of new members. Let’s talk it up! We can use a maximum of 15 runners on each of the 4 teams, and only the 3 fastest on each team count in the scoring, based upon official (gross) time. |
