Joe Barr
CCAC President
1940-1997

~ Joe Weinberger

Our President and long time club member died unexpectedly on Saturday, October 11 in the early morning hours. Joe was so many things to many people. Husband to Elisabeth, father to two sons, brother to two brothers and dear friend to us all.

Joe accomplished a lot in his life. A bachelor’s and masters degree from Fordham University. He earned a doctorate from Anna Maria College.

For over 30 years he worked as Professor of Economics and Business Administration at Framingham State College, where he also served as the department chair from 1971 to 1986.

In addition, from 1982 to 1997 he worked at Cape Cod Community College as a lecturer and teacher of Microcomputer applications and economics. He founded his own computer business, Ocean Computers, where he instructed and did repairs.

Joe was a runner for 20 years, completing 10 marathons, including Boston, NYC, and the Marine Corps in Washington D.C. Also countless other races. He was a fixture at all local road races. If he wasn’t running in the race he was volunteering, whether it was an aid station, timing, registration, or any other chore that had to be done. In 1997 alone he was Race Director of the Johnny Kelley Half Marathon, Co-Director of the Hyannis Half Marathon and just recently helped stage the 10K Memory Run for the Alzheimer Association on Oct. 4th. As President of our club he put in numerous hours improving and organizing the club. A fine example would be the newsletter which he brought to new heights.

Joe was an accomplished man. He did it all with the idea of always helping someone. He weill be missed by all who knew and loved him. The next time you’re out running think of Joe. The next time you’re sipping a cold beer after a run, toast Joe. I know I will. He would have loved both. Thanks Joe for all youdid for the club and for being such a good friend.

God bless you.
