In the middle of August, Kathie and George Henry decided to escape the heat and head north for a few days … way north! With a bit of smooth-talking, they managed to convince Dave Mason, Mary Peabody and Sue Lowry to join them. Here’s their report from Iceland, land of the midnight sun.
Kathie & I are back from a wonderful trip to Iceland! We had a great time. The race(s) were very well organized, with friendly, supportive fans along the course which was a relatively flat, fast course. Temps in the 50’s & no rain. We took the 2pm flight out of Boston and got to the 101 Hotel at midnight. Great hotel and just minutes from the starting line. Highly recommend staying at the 101 Hotel. Kathie & I did the Circle Tour and saw Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysers Hot Springs, The Blue Lagoon- very nice place to go and soak sore muscles. We also did whale watching…never did it here on the Cape.
Dave Mason, Mary Peabody, & Sue Lowry all did AWESOME!!! Dave 1st Men’s USA 60’s, Mary 1st Women’s USA 50’s. I did just OK having missed 2 full weeks due to a back injury during training.
Some interesting people we met, a gentleman who has climbed the 7 highest peaks in the world, (7 Summits Club), 2 folks who ran Antarctica, Stephen Boone who just finished his 517th marathon, a young guy from the UK who said he wasn’t a runner..he only did 3:03 for the Marathon…found out he’s a world class rower, and a number of very friendly folks from all over the world.
Culture Night in Iceland was unbelievable!!! Icelanders stay up until 4am…wild party!!! We would definitely go back.
