Rick Heath Runs Against Cancer

Inspired by one man’s effort to help battle cancer, the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League have announced that it will sponsor Cotuit Kettleers team photographer Rick Heath’s plan to run for 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Rick has planned his 24 hour, 85 mile run for Friday June 24, 2005, beginning at Elizabeth Lowell Park prior to the Cotuit Kettleer’s home game versus Wareham at 5 p.m. After taking a warm lap around the perimeter of Lowell Park, hopefully joined in by as many fans who are willing, Rick will pace some 85 miles along local roads to Foxboro, and then finishing in West Bridgewater, Rick’s home town, arriving at approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday.

Rick, a long time marathon and long distance runner, hopes that his run will help raise donations to the American Cancer Society. The Cotuit Athletic Association has already donated $200 to help Rick’s cause. The town of Falmouth will be holding their first annual, “American Cancer Society 18 Hour Relay for Life” beginning on Friday evening, and Rick has been approached by the American Cancer Society and has been asked if he could “run into” this event. This would add approximately 15-20 miles to Rick’s route, and has indicated to the American Cancer Society that it would be unlikely he could honor their request.

Rick has been running for the past 27 years and has logged over 30,000 miles. He has competed in over 500 road races in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Typically, Rick will log in 40-60 miles a week. Last year, he managed an 18 hour run that took him 72 miles around the Ahern Middle School track in Foxboro, the site of the “American Cancer Society 18 Hour Relay For Life”. Foxboro will be hosting the event again this year, and Rick hopes to run onto the track there between 11 a.m. and the noon time hour.

Rick has been a member of the Cape Cod Athletic Club for 27 years and competes in 15-20 road races each year. He raised over $2000 last year for the American Cancer Society.

Anyone interested in making a tax deductible donation to the American Cancer Society on Rick’s behalf and his 24 hour crusade against cancer, should send checks, made payable to the American Cancer Society, to: Mr. Ivan Partridge, Cotuit Kettleers, P.O.Box 411, Cotuit, MA, 02635.
